Pre-Launch Checklist: Testing Your Instagram DM Automation Flow Before It Goes Live

September 21, 2026 3 min read

By the end of this guide, you'll have a practical checklist to run through before publishing any new Instagram DM automation flow, catching the small mistakes that are obvious once you test but easy to miss from the builder screen.

Why Testing Matters More Than It Seems

A flow can look complete in the builder — keyword set, message written, button added — and still fail the moment a real person interacts with it. Broken links, awkward phrasing, a keyword that doesn't quite match how people actually comment: these are almost always obvious the moment you test the flow as a stranger would, and almost never obvious just reading through the setup screen.

The Checklist

1. Comment the exact keyword yourself

Post a test comment using your configured keyword and confirm the automated reply and DM actually arrive. This catches the most basic failure — a flow that's technically saved but not actually connected to the post you meant it to trigger on.

2. Try close variations of the keyword

Comment a lowercase version, a version with a typo, and a version with extra words around it ("what's the price?" vs just "PRICE"). If your keyword matching is strict, you may be missing a meaningful share of real commenters who don't type the exact match.

3. Read the DM copy out loud

Read every message in the flow as if you were saying it to a friend over text. Anything that sounds stiff or robotic on the read-through will read the same way to the person receiving it — worth fixing now rather than after it's live. Our guide on writing scripts that sound human covers this in more depth.

4. Tap every button

Confirm each button actually leads where it's supposed to — a checkout page, a booking calendar, a specific product. A button pointing at an outdated or incorrect link will quietly send real leads to the wrong place until someone notices.

5. Check the follow-gate, if you're using one

Test the flow both as an account that already follows you and one that doesn't, confirming the gate actually behaves differently in each case — the content stays locked until the follow happens, and unlocks cleanly once it does.

6. Confirm any qualifying question renders correctly

If your flow includes a qualifying question, make sure the answer options display properly and that each answer actually routes to the response you intended — a broken branch here can silently misroute leads without any obvious error.

7. Time how long the full flow takes

Walk through the entire sequence and note how long it takes from the first comment to the final message. If it feels slow or clunky as a tester with nothing else competing for your attention, it will feel even slower to someone scrolling past other content.

8. Check it on mobile, not just desktop

Almost everyone interacting with your flow will be on their phone. Button sizing, message length, and overall readability can look different on mobile than they do while building the flow on a larger screen.

Making This a Habit, Not a One-Time Step

This checklist matters most before a brand-new flow goes live, but it's worth a quick re-run any time you edit an existing flow too — even a small copy change can introduce a broken variable or a mismatched button without it being obvious from the edit screen alone.

Next Step

Before your next flow goes live, comment on your own post and walk through the entire sequence as a stranger would. Test your flows for free in Maedix before publishing, or check the pricing plans if you're building out flows across multiple posts or accounts.
